Reasons For Late Period…It May Not Be What You Think

reasons for late periodReasons for late period can vary widely from one person to the next. Women are very in tune with their bodies, especially when it comes to their period.  But one thing's for sure, when a woman's period is late, she's certain it must be for one reason only. She's pregnant! If you've missed a period or you're late, there are several reasons other than pregnancy that could cause your period to run a bit behind schedule. So let's take a look at some of the most common reasons a woman's period may be late.

Medication Or Your Birth Control May Be The Culprit

If you've started taking a prescription medication, it is possible that this could be one of the reasons for a late period. There are also some forms of birth control that may also cause changes with your period. In either case you should ask your doctor if the medication or birth control method could cause your period to be late.

Being Overweight Is One Of The Most Common Reasons For Late Period

Many women are surprised to learn that carrying a lot of weight can interfere with their ability to have a normal regular period. An increased amount of weight can cause hormonal changes in a woman's body. This then can cause her period to stop completely. Losing weight will usually bring her hormones back into balance and regular periods should resume.

Too Much Working Out

If your weight is less than it should be for your body size, height, and age you are more likely to experience late periods or have none at all. The same would be true for a woman who is a professional athlete. In both cases, the reasons for late period is due to a lack of body fat.

Stress

Stress can be one of the reasons for a late period. If a woman is experiencing stress in her life, her body can respond in many ways. One way is the reduction of a hormone called GnRh (Gonadotropin-releasing hormone). This hormone is responsible for ovulation. Without ovulation, a woman cannot menstruate. If there are events going on in your life that are stressing you out, it's time to find ways to relax and relieve your stress.

1 + 27 = 35? Maybe Your Calculation Is Just A Little Off

Often the reasons for late period may simply be attributed to a miscalculation of time. The rule of thumb is that every woman will have a period every 28 days like clockwork. Unfortunately, it doesn't always workout this way. Every woman is different, and the 28 day rule does not apply to every woman.

Age

As a woman ages, she will eventually reach what is called Peri-menopause. During this time, her ability to have children begins to decrease. Periods go through several stages during Peri-Menopause. She may have late periods, or no periods for a while. Her periods can resume as suddenly as they stopped. After Peri-Menopause is Menopause. During Menopause ovulation stops and periods stop completely.

Maybe You Are Pregnant!

The last in our list of reasons for late period would not be complete if we didn't mention… you could indeed be pregnant! Taking one of those at home pregnancy tests would be a good idea if you think there is a possibility that you may be expecting. If it turns out you are pregnant, be sure to see an OB/GYN to begin getting pre-natal care.
